For my project I made a graphic novel/webcomic. The main theme of the story is two kids that get wrapped up in trying to save the world from an evil so dark it would send the universe into the black void. They travel through different dimensions/realm and each time the style changes. The format of the graphic novel is the same as webtoon which is less of the classic graphic novel format and a little more like a comic. I’m not finishing the whole story because I want it to be a series with episodes that I would post on Webtoon, I will put teasers and parts of it on my website and my instagram account.
When I started drawing the graphics at first I was using Adobe Illustrator but I was paying way too much attention to detail and it was taking forever. After I realized I wouldn't be able to get it done on time if I continued at that pace, I switched over to an app called Autodesk SketchBook that I installed on my iPad, I also used my Apple pencil with it. When I switched the software I was working on it went way faster and was way more enjoyable, since it was more similar to using paper instead of a drawing tablet and a monitor. The quality of the characters and some of the backgrounds will also be better with this app. In my opinion it’s easier to use as well. I decided to create a graphic novel because I always liked making little comics as a kid and I was also getting into digital art and animation. It’s also one of the main reasons I joined VAM academy in the first place. I also love writing stories because I get so deep into the storyline and the characters that it feels like I’m almost in the story myself. That's also one of the reasons I was behind on this project. Making this also made me feel like one of my stories is more professional than just writing one and showing your friends.

I've come a long way this year when it's concerning art but right now we are just talking about this semester. I've started my independent project which is a chapter of a graphic novel I'm making, in about a week it's the halfway mark and I think I've finished the story for this chapter so I can focus on the graphics. It's honesty a lot of fun getting to make whatever you want and can work on the medium that you love or want to work on. A big part of this project is managing your time wisely so I need to make sure I'm getting the graphics done on time but still having good quality. Time management is challenging for me because I don't like planning ahead I like to just go and do what I need to do but I know that I need to make sure I'm getting this done on time which can be hard. I also need to work on being less of a perfectionist and realize that it's not going to be perfect and I can always work on my art and technique and skills as I'm going and after as well. By doing this project and just being in this academy I've learned that I kind of like the more digital side of art and editing and photography. I still love traditional art but digital applies more to my interests. I also want to work on more photography on my own time I already take loads of pictures when I walk my puppy but that's only on my phone I want to use a better camera, another thing I want to work on is drawing and sketching I want to do that more so whenever I'm bored I want to sketch some random things. So that's what I've been up to so far and now you know.
This semester was a good one, I don't have that much to compare it to though but I enjoyed it and had a lot of fun. I found out that I'm actually pretty good at painting, at first I thought I was terrible at painting because whenever I would paint it looked like a little kid did it. Now I realize that I paint better if I plan out what I want to paint and how I want it to look instead of just starting, it turns out a lot better. Before I joined the academy I realized I liked digital art and going through this course has taught me a lot more about it and how to use the software properly. I now know that I love photoshop and definitely want to use it more often in school and also out of school. At the beginning of the year I set two smart goals, but I could only complete one. I did end up drawing and sketching more often but I couldn't get a streak of 73 on duolingo. Every time that I would get a high streak I would miss a day and lose it until there wasn't any time left to get it high enough again. Going back to the more positive things, one of the highlights of this semester for me isn't necessarily art related. My favourite part of this semester is the people you get to meet and get to know them better, and make friends. If I'm being honest the friends that I have are the most important part of my life right now because they mean so much to me. There were some challenges for me to overcome this semester but the biggest one was presenting to the fine arts academies, I've been terrified of public speaking since forever. I've never had to speak in front of that many people before, sure I've performed for more people than that but I never had to speak and this time I did. In my mine I think I died but everyone else said I did good so I'm just gonna stop listening to myself and just believe them. I'm going to set another goal for this semester and that is going to be to find my style of drawing, I've seen lots of different styles on instagram and taken little pieces from different ones but still haven't found one that clicks with me. So this semester I want to find my style.
I actually couldn't go to the celebration of learning because I had to go to a guitar lesson that I couldn't miss. I didn't have much of a choice to come or not I missed the lesson before that because I was pretty sick and I couldn't miss another one. It's important for me to be at my art showings because it's important to help the viewers of your art to connect to it better and help them understand it better. You can help them by answering questions about your art and your inspiration, it also feels more real when your there.
The main focus of my piece is my relationship with my best friend Julia. We know each other so well it was easy to come up with ideas for this project. The first thing you need to know about it is we created a Utopian country for a project in grade eight. This piece is based off that part of our friendship that we still keep going. In the background you see the flag we made about a year after the project was finished with red on the top with a symbol and blue on the bottom with another symbol. There is also a dinosaur claw in the middle which played a big part in our country. There are speech bubbles around the flag that have messages in our language. We can both read and write in our language. In the middle you see us both, me on the left and her on the right. We are drawn with animal ears and tails, I am a mouse because in a way I am Mickey Mouse and she is a wolf because that’s her favorite animal. I chose that art style because I have liked it for a very long time but have never drawn with it. I don’t have clean edges because we are both messes, we are the weirdest people I have ever seen and I’m grateful for that. It makes us who we are. I chose the art mediums that I did because I thought they would have unity and contrast and make the piece look better. Click image to see in gallery
I completed the blog post on time but decided to take more time to edit it because I forgot to check the rubric, next time I will work on looking at the rubric at the start and checking it through out writing it and finishing editing it before the due date comes.
I have started my first goal to practice Spanish I had a streak of 3 days but was busy with something else when the alarm to practice went off, so I stopped the alarm and forgot to practice. I will work on practicing then and there when the alarm go's off and if I can't i will set a timer to go off at a better time. I haven't started sketching yet because there is a lot of other things going on, but I will put up more reminders and start when ever possible. So far I still think my goals are still smart goals and I am still committed to making them happen. I think there is enough detail in my smart goals to track them. I have to practice 73 days in a row out of the 127 days left of this semester. I have to sketch in any of my spare time and that seems pretty easy if you like to draw which I do. A Smart Goal for those of you that don't know what it is, it's a goal that you make with these requirements: S- Specific M- Measurable A- Achievable R- Relevant T- Time Bound My first Smart Goal is to get my streak up to 73 days on Duo-lingo to become better at speaking Spanish. I will do this by practicing two different subjects in Spanish on the app every day I will set alarms for 5:00. I want to reach 73 days in a row by January 31 2019, the end of this semester. My second Smart Goal is to spend more time sketching and animating to bring my skill level up and because I like art. I will put up reminders where I will see them so I will draw whenever I can. I want to sketch as much as possible until January 31 2019, the end of this semester.
